This Monday, the writers of The Soaring Eagle, the Hauppauge High School Newspaper, and advisor Mrs. Kaminski collaborated with the Hauppauge Middle School Newspaper, The Hauppauge Howler. This before-school club is run by Ms. Sidden. This paper is one collaborative spread with various articles on local news, interviews, school, community, and more!

The middle school club has 8 attentive and eager writers as part of their team. Every couple of weeks the newspaper is posted for everyone to read, similar to the high school newspaper; aside from the fact that high schoolers post weekly news.

The two editors of The Soaring Eagle, Stevie Donna Rosenfeld and Parker Smith, helped create stations concerning teaching middle schoolers how to frame their writing, and how to approach interviews. Stevie’s station was all about the importance of structure for a certain category of writing. Upside-down triangle, Upside Down trapezoid, and hourglass are examples of how students should frame their writing to get the best results in their work! Stevie explained the history of modern journalism to the students as well. Meanwhile, at the other station run by Parker, the students learned how to ask the best questions for interviews, and came up with ideas for their next publication!

After the students figured out what they were going to write about, they were separated into categories that correlated to the high school’s newspaper-divided sections. All the kids were intrigued in comparing the high school to the middle school. When at the middle school for the first half of the trip, the kids and their high school friends went to advisories and lunch periods to obtain data for their articles. Some kids compared sports, like Matt did, or compared organization skills and mental health between age groups like Dakota, or how Peyton talked all about art! After some interviews in one school, the group all traveled back to the high school to get data for their papers, and of course some pizza. These flourishing ideas were uploaded for publication in the Hauppauge Howler.

Personal Experience

I was super excited to go on this field trip and share some of my personal experiences regarding journalism and writing! Mrs. Kaminski and Ms. Sidden did a great job organizing this event, and I think everyone else had a great time as well. I loved being able to get to know the younger kids and share my passion for writing with them at such an early age. While walking around the halls with them getting interviews, we talked about middle school and how exciting high school is going to be when they take the journalism course. It was nice to just have a day to partake in activities that I’m interested in and get to reconnect with some old teachers at the middle school to partake in activities that I’m interested in and get to reconnect with some old teachers at the middle school as well. I think all of the students on the trip today learned something valuable whether it was a lesson for high school or tips in writing articles.
